Ten-year-old Goh Jin Wei capped a superb outing in the 100Plus National Junior Badminton Circuit Zone A Championships by bagging a double at the Penang BA Hall in Bukit Dumbar yesterday.

The diminutive 1.39m tall Penang lass was heads and shoulders above her older opponents as she smashed her way to the Girls’ Under-12 singles and doubles titles in her debut outing.

The Standard Four SJK (C) Jit Sin B, Berapit student’s two titles contributed to Penang’s record haul of six in the first leg of the North Zone challenge yesterday.

“It is my special love for the game that enabled me to beat the odds,” said an excited Jin Wei, who is the younger of two sisters in the family.

“I knew it was not going to be easy and was worried about getting the jitters. But I wanted to make my parents proud and I guess that inspired me. I took it on myself to give my best to thank them for their support.”

Jin Wei, who shocked the local badminton fraternity by winning the Penang Girls’ Under-12 singles title last year, was in her element against Perak’s Desiree Siow of Perak in yesterday’s singles final.

After losing the first game at 18-21, she stormed back to take the second at 21-13 and then outlasted Desiree in the third to wrap up the title at 21-19.

Jin Wei then partnered Ooi Shi Han to oust team-mates Kong Yi Jin and Lim Ming Hui 21-8, 21-14 to win the doubles title.

The others who contributed to Penang’s six-title haul are Tan Jia Wei (Boy’s Under-12 singles), Cheam June Wei-Tang Wei Sen (Boy’s Under-14 doubles), Eng Suk Cheng (Girl’s Under-18 singles) and Angelina Low Min Yee-Liu Jin Nee (Girls Under-18 doubles).

Kuala Lumpur’s Ho Yen Mei also bagged a double yesterday. She lived up to her top-seed tag to beat Penang’s Chuah Cheah Lin 21-14, 21-14 in the Girls’ Under-14 final and then teamed up with Lee Shu Ern to defeat Penang’s Cheah Lin and Loh Qi Yuan 21-19, 22-20 to bag the doubles crown.
